Idaho's Big Read

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of its citizens.  The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment."  To learn more about The Big Read, visit http://www.neabigread.org/.

The Big Read is a time to share a favorite or important book, to explore ideas, themes and topics of local interest as a community. We invite our community to read a book together and experience a number of book related events and activities in the Treasure Valley and other Idaho locations. 

The Big Read selection for 2009 is THE MALTESE FALCON by Dashiell Hammett.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS:

Most events are free to the public - some offered with special Big Read prices.  The Cabin will have "Read and Release" packets of The Maltese Falcon available at most events.   Event attendees will have a chance to enter a drawing to win a bookstore gift certificate.

January 13, 2009 Kick-off media event 10:00 AM The Egyptian Theatre
Mayor David Bieter formally opens The Big Read and the falcon disappears!

January 20, 2009 Legislative Day at The Capitol Annex
The Idaho Library Association presents legislators with a copy of The Maltese Falcon and materials.

February 1-14, 2009 Ada Community Library - Main Library, 10664 W. Victory Rd
Special display of pulp fiction and early crime comics (including The Maltese Falcon).

CSI Boise - Forensics and the Ada County Sheriff's Office 7:00 PM
Location: Boise Public Library - Hillcrest Branch, 5246 W Overland Rd
Ada County detectives present information on local cases and crime scene processes.

The Thin Man Film Screening 5:30 PM
Location: The Overland Park Cinema, 7051 W. Overland Rd
Free screening of the Thin Man, the first of Dashiell Hammett's popular series of books about former private detective, Nick Charles (William Powell), and his clever young wife, Nora (Myrna Loy).  A reception with light refreshments and Thin Man discussion follows next door at Rediscovered Books.

Richard Layman, author of six books on Dashiell Hammett and two time nominee for an Edgar Award by the Mystery Writers of America for editing "Selected Letters of Dashiell Hammett, 1921-1960" and "Discovering The Maltese Falcon and Sam Spade," will present fascinating facts about The Maltese Falcon sure to spark a lively facilitated discussion to follow.

We're celebrating falcons at the World Center with a reception, archives of falconry tours, and live bird demonstrations (inside/outside weather dependent).  Also - The Cabin will be on hand for "What's Your Big Read?" asking for a 15 second video description of your latest "Big Read" to share via our website.  Special Big Read entrance fees all day: $5 Adults/$4 Seniors/$3 Children.  Special falcon activities 12-3 PM.

The Maltese Falcon Film Screenings 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM
Location: The Egyptian Theatre, 700 W. Main St
Experience director John Huston's faithful adaptation of Hammett's novel on the big screen at Big Read pricing of $5 either show.  Humphrey Bogart leads a first rate cast in a film not to be missed.

Killing English: How Dashiell Hammett Transformed Mystery Story Language 7:00 PM
Location:  Ada Community Library, 10664 W. Victory Rd
Hammett's fictional characters utilized language ranging from urban criminal lingo of the 1920s to lyrical poetic, and none of his characters so exemplified this linguistic richness as much as those in The Maltese Falcon.  Referencing novel and film, author and music critic Norm Weinstein leads an exploration of Hammett's impact on language of American detective tales, introducing a new sense of humor and shock into American English.
